Unraveling COVID-19: The Sound of Science

COVID19 Sounds by University of Cambridge Information Services explores the auditory data associated with the pandemic, combining science and technology to enhance public understanding through novel soundscapes.
The aim of this study is to gather data to enhance the diagnosis of COVID-19 through the development of machine learning algorithms. This initiative primarily focuses on analyzing voice patterns, breathing, and cough sounds.
To facilitate this research endeavor, a wide-scale, crowd-sourced data collection effort will be initiated, engaging both healthy and non-healthy participants via a designated application. The application will gather essential demographic details and medical history, in addition to recording voice samples (as users read provided text), brief recordings of breathing and coughing using the phone's microphone, and one-time location information. Users will also be asked about their COVID-19 testing status.
It is important to note that the application will not engage in any form of user tracking and will only gather data upon user interaction. All data collected will be securely stored on University servers and strictly utilized for research purposes. Additionally, there are plans to make the dataset available to other researchers following the initial analysis and pre-processing phase. Notably, the application will not provide medical advice, and any indication of symptoms will not prompt direct medical assistance.
